HOW DID YOU GET INTO HAIR?

Grace Ilasco - Hair Styling, Hair Coloring, Make up Career

I have always been a creative person growing up.  I could have chosen any field in the arts and would have been happy, but one day I came across a beauty school that was a few blocks away from my house and thought it would be fun to learn to do hair and make-up.  Little did I know, it would turn out to be my long time career and my passion.

Back in my middle school days, I used to cut and experiment with some of my friend’s hair.  They didn’t mind, but when it came to my Mom’s hair, she refused to have me touch her hair until I went to beauty school.  That was how I got started.  I went to beauty school in high school and started my career immediately after I graduated.

It's been a wonderful journey that I am very pleased I began so young.

And, my Mom loves her hair every time - as do my Clients.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DOING HAIR?

When I first began doing hair I loved that I was able to help a Client achieve a personalized hair color, cut and new make up look that was individual and perfectly suited to her needs.

As the years go by, I find myself loving my job even more because not only do I get to work in a field that allows for originality, but, I get to build personal relationships with each and every one of my Clients.

It’s like working in a field with a bunch of friends!

STYLING?
Styling was one of the first things I got into.  We had a styling/ makeover competition at our beauty school and I won 1st place.  At the time, I had no real training in updo’s and styling since my beauty school mainly focused on the basics.

I have found that I have an eye for it and have been given a gift of hands to work with hair to create great masterpieces.

Styling is harder than it looks or seems.  The most simplest do or style is actually the hardest because it doesn’t allow for any mistakes.  If the work is not done clean, you have no way of going around it.  You must start over.  More intricate styles give a little more freedom for creativity, and it’s ok if the hairstyle is not symmetrical.  The style was meant to be that way.  Compared to stylists who just style because that’s what the stylist or the client wants, I look at the person’s facial features, head shape, & hair texture to see what style will be the most appealing for that person.  I would like to say I have very good judgment when it comes to that.

COLORING?
I love Coloring Hair!  I think you can do so much with color.  There are so many different color combinations that you can do for someone’s hair which changes the way they feel about themselves and the way people perceive them.   It also gives the hair a lot of shine and dimension, which totally livens it up.  So long as the person allows it, I am able to give them a really unique color scheme that they can claim for themselves.  I’ve been doing color and worked with several color lines in the last 7 years and there’s always something new to learn about it whether it’s a new color line, technology, or a new technique and I am happy I am able to showcase those skills on my Clients.

SERVICING OTHERS?
Upon starting my career, I never thought that doing hair involves so much with dealing people.  I thought I would just come in and create anything I wanted but soon realized that it was all about the people.  It was what the people wanted and how I was able to give them my opinion of value of what hairstyle or color would suite them best.  It was here that I realized, this is more of a people job than anything else.  If you can’t please the people, then you wouldn’t have an outlet to express your work.  Together with the Client, I am able to really understand what they want, what they are comfortable with, and how far they are willing to go.  I am very patient and probably one of the few stylists out there who will actually allow the Client to be picky with me.  I feel I have a really friendly and outgoing personality that makes the Client feel comfortable to be able to tell me what they want regarding their hair and even more.  My second job is to be their friend.  It’s great to be doing my job, enjoying my time conversing with my Clients.

WHAT ARE YOUR PERSONAL CAREER GOALS?

I’m a very ambitious person and always strive for the best.  If I’m going to be anything, I want to be the best that I can be at it, however, nobody is perfect and mastery is for a lifetime and I don’t mind learning for the rest of my life.

I love the arts!  The beauty industry allows me to play with my talent and actually make a living out of it.  What more can you ask for?  I love to be on top of the latest trends or technology when it comes to hair and beauty.  I like to differentiate myself from what is the norm out there.

I would like to say, I am also business minded, not because I want to make lots of money, but because I am able to see what makes a business run well and what needs to be fixed.  I am a problem solver and a fixer.  If there is a problem, I would like to fix it.  I also love the creative side of business.

I would love to open a business that is different from anything else out there.  Having been in the beauty industry the longest, it would be ideal for me own and run my own salon, however, I am already in the process of starting and running an on-location wedding beauty mobile service alongside working for the My Bella Color Studio, which would be a great start and learning experience for a first timer.

I am happy to bring potential brides to the salon and give them a real pampering experience.

ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT YOUR CLIENTS TO KNOW?

Make up and Hair Coloring by Grace Ilasco

I may seem like plain Jane but I express my individuality through my art and my works.  That is why I do beauty.  I am very creative and the person that gives me the privilege of creativity will get the best of my imagination.   I am a very good listener.  That is why my Clients trust in me to give them a hairstyle they actually want.  I am the most probably the most patient and calm person you’ll probably ever meet.  I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing but it certainly comes in handy when it comes to unexpected situations.  I take on any challenge that is given to me or comes my way as scary as it may be and I believe that is why I learn so fast and makes me the confident person I am now.  I like to lead my Clients to a direction they may never have taken before as they may discover a new side of themselves.  Life is about learning and growing and that is what makes you hope for more.
